January construction update from the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy

The latest Monthly Construction Update from the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS), which uses the Builders Merchant Building Index (BMBI) as one of its sources, is now available.

The latest update shows that construction output increased by 3.5% in November 2021. Anecdotal evidence suggests the rise was driven by strong demand for work, the easing of supply chain bottlenecks for some products, and the unseasonal mild and dry weather. The increase came solely from an increase in new work (5.7%) as repair and maintenance declined slightly (-0.2%).

The strong monthly growth means that the level of construction output in November 2021 was 1.3% above the February 2020 pre-coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic level.
